In 2022, my overarching goal was to be much more intentional about designing my future life (and financial life) than I had been in the past: My 2002 goals blog post.
However, I definitely didn’t earn a passing grade in 2022; at most I’d give myself a C+ overall: good but not excellent. Going into 2023, I’ve got to step up my game. I’ll outline that in a future post.
My grading scheme is as follows: A = Achieved, B = So close, C = Good, D = Needs improvement, F = Fail.
Work
Work towards leaving the company 9-5 and work for myself as consultant in my field.
- B: I set up a corporation and created a website and related content. I even had a few meetings with potential clients. I also had a few conversations with my boss about working towards this and going part-time (4 days of work a week).
Develop online educational material/course including 1:1 consulting
- D: I put minimal work towards these efforts in 2022. I set up a LinkTree and purchased a resource to develop what I hope to be compelling online educational material. However, I did monetize my Twitter account in 2022 earning between $1500-$2000 this year. Small I know but I do hope to grow this overtime as another stream of income, in addition to small blog related income to date from advertisements.
Investments
Earn $60,000 in annual dividends
- B: While 2022 is not over and more dividends are due later this December, it looks like I’ll come quite close to achieving this objective.
Buy a Vacation Rental Property
- B+: While I technically bought this property in late 2021, I was supposed to close on this property in late 2022. However, closing was delayed through no fault of my own (or even the builder really) and is now scheduled tentatively for February 2023.
Blog / Social Media
Write two blog posts a month
- C: In 2022, I wrote 17 blog posts (including this one). Not bad but I can do better.
Grow Twitter followers to 5K
- B: On January 3rd, my Twitter account had 1,863 followers. As of December 27, 2022, my Twitter following is 4,772. Close but no cigar. I also started an Instagram account in late 2022.
Education
Educate self on Twitter and LinkedIn growth and monetization strategies
- F: I looked into courses and resources on this but never actually did any of the work required.
Read or listen to several self-improvement/financial books on this list or take the “cheat course”.
- A: While I only read only one book from that list, I am giving myself an A here as I read several other financial books (such as “Taking Stock“) not on that list and consumed hundreds of podcasts and blog posts.
Educate self on travel point accumulation strategies
- A: I definitely did more reading on this subject, subscribed to resources like the Prince of Travel, and credit card hacked by signing up for 3 airline and hotel credit cards to obtain their lucrative sign up bonuses, such as the Amex Aeroplan (referral link valid for Canadians).
